Loyalty Day was originated by the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) on the East Coast, with Newports Veterans starting our local Loyalty Day celebration in May of 1956. As the celebration continued to spread throughout the nation, Congress wrote a Joint Resolution and President Eisenhower signed the Bill into law designating the First of May as Loyalty Day, a special day set aside for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom. With Newports strong support of the Loyalty Day tradition and its designation as a Coast Guard City USA, we invite you to share in this years celebration.

Pies, Pies, Pies!..The Ladies Club pie socials are famous for their astounding variety of delicious pies. Each slice is a generous 6th of a pie and costs $3.50. celebrate our wilderness areas and the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. At Cape Perpetua there will be native flute performances, guest speakers and interpretive hikes scheduled throughout the day. There will be informational / educational tables and more at the Yachats Commons between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. (Please see the complete Program of activities.) This event will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of our coastal Angell Job Corps. This organization plays a crucial role in providing education and training for young adults to become productive citizens. As a partner to the Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon Parks, and surrounding communities, the Angell Job Corps has contributed to trail building and maintenance projects since initiating their first community project in 1964, the rebuilding of the Giant Spruce Tree Trail.
